Belgaum: Senior sportsman and loyal Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti worker from Hindalaga village, Mr. Fakira Venkatesh Devgekar, passed away on Monday, May 18, at 10:15 am after a brief illness. He was the father of renowned Shivshahir Venkatesh Devgekar from the border region.
Fakira Devgekar was widely known as one of the finest athletes from Hindalaga village and had consistently secured top positions in Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, running and traditional fitness events across Belgaum district. He was also a beloved sports figure associated with the village’s Marathi primary school.

Known for his honesty, simplicity and selfless social service, Devgekar was respected by people from all walks of life. Many described him as an “Ajatshatru” — a man without enemies.
He actively participated in the election campaigns of late MLA B. I. Patil and was also considered a close associate of late Railway Minister Suresh Angadi. People in the village often fondly referred to him in connection with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
His demise has created a deep void in the village and among the sporting community.

The immersion of ashes ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 21, at 8:00 am.
May his soul rest in peace.
