Belgaum : A shocking incident of suicide by a senior doctor has created a stir in Belgaum’s medical fraternity after he allegedly shot himself at his residence in Tilakwadi on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Dr. Dinesh Laxman Bhatkal (79), originally from Ankola taluk in Uttara Kannada district. He had been residing in Belgaum for the past several years and was actively involved in medical service. At present, he was associated with KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital.
According to sources, the incident took place around 6 a.m. when Dr. Bhatkal allegedly shot himself in the balcony of his house. Hearing the gunshot, family members and nearby residents rushed to the spot, only to find that he had already passed away.
Police suspect that he may have taken the extreme step due to illness and mental depression, as he had reportedly been diagnosed with cancer a few days ago. Officials stated that the exact reason behind the suicide will be known only after a detailed investigation.
Senior officers from Tilakwadi Police Station visited the scene and conducted an inspection before initiating further inquiry into the case.
Before settling in Belgaum, Dr. Bhatkal had served in the medical field for several years and was regarded as a respected personality in the city’s elite circles. His sudden death has left many in shock and grief.
