Decorated officer Brigadier Girish Upadhyay, recipient of the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, has been appointed as the Brigadier and Commandant of the prestigious The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre in Belgaum. His appointment has brought pride and joy to the military fraternity as well as the people of Belgaum.
Brigadier Girish Upadhyay was born on July 1, 1972, in Kadker, Udupi district of Karnataka. He completed his primary education at Sahakari Junior College, Koteshwar, and pursued higher education at Bhandarkar Arts and Science College. He later underwent military training at the Indian military academy in Dehradun and was commissioned into the prestigious 15th Battalion of The Maratha Light Infantry on December 7, 1996.
Throughout his distinguished military career, Brigadier Upadhyay has held several important appointments. He served as Company Commander in 8 Assam Rifles, Training Company Commander and Training Battalion Commander at The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, and also held the rank of DIG at Headquarters 23 Sector Assam Rifles.
He has also served as SO-3 (Intelligence) at Headquarters 9 Sector Assam Rifles in Imphal and played a significant role as G-2 (Military Intelligence) with the United Nations Mission in DR Congo. In addition, he served as Director (Land/Amphibious Division) at Headquarters IDS, New Delhi, Directing Staff at the Army War College, Mhow, and Deputy Commander at Headquarters 40 Mountain Brigade, KM-6, Tawang.
Brigadier Upadhyay successfully commanded the 15th Battalion of The Maratha Light Infantry and led the battalion to several notable achievements. In recognition of his exceptional leadership and dedicated service, he was honoured with the COAS Commendation Card. He has also been awarded the Sena Medal twice and the Vishisht Seva Medal once for his bravery and distinguished military service.
He will now take charge as the Commandant of The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, and it is believed that his leadership will further strengthen the institution’s glorious legacy, discipline, and morale.
