1971 Indo-Pak War Veteran Subedar Dattatraya Navar Passes Away

Belgaum, June 6: Subedar Dattatraya N. Navar (JC-155644P), a distinguished veteran of the Indian Army’s 15 Maratha Light Infantry and a participant in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, passed away, leaving behind a proud legacy of courage, patriotism, and dedicated service to the nation.

Born on January 11, 1951, Subedar Navar joined the Indian Army on April 30, 1970. After nearly 28 years of exemplary service, he retired on April 30, 1998.

As a young soldier of the 15 Maratha Light Infantry, he had the honor of serving in the historic 1971 Indo-Pak War. During the conflict, the battalion took part in the famous Battle of Burj, where Pakistan’s 43 Baloch Battalion suffered significant losses. For its outstanding bravery and performance, the battalion was awarded the “Burj” Battle Honour and the “Punjab” Theatre Honour, along with several gallantry awards, including one Maha Vir Chakra, three Vir Chakras, three Sena Medals, and three Mentions-in-Dispatches.

During his military career, Subedar Navar served in C Company, 8 Platoon, 15 Maratha Light Infantry, eventually rising to the rank of Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO). Even after retirement, he remained actively associated with ex-servicemen’s organizations and continued inspiring fellow veterans, youth, and society through his commitment to service.

A resident of Basarge, Post Usgaon, Belgaum Taluk, he is survived by his wife Annapurna Dattatraya Navar, sons Kamleshwar D. Navar (Retired, presently serving with DSC) and Mohan D. Navar, and daughter Kusum.

He was laid to rest with full military honors. The funeral was attended by local citizens, civil administration officials, serving soldiers of the 15 Maratha Light Infantry, and ex-servicemen. Floral tributes were paid on behalf of the Regiment by Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla (SC, SM, VSM), Colonel of the Regiment and Commandant MLIRC, Brigadier Girish Upadhyay (SM, VSM), and representatives of the 15 Maratha Light Infantry.

Officers, JCOs, and soldiers of the 15 Maratha Light Infantry have expressed their heartfelt condolences and paid rich tributes to the departed war veteran.
