Bring Back Jai Kisan Market: Traders Seek Justice, Revival and Livelihood Security

Belgaum: Once considered a symbol of growth and opportunity for traders and farmers, the ‘Jai Kisan Wholesale Vegetable Market’ in Belgaum now stands deserted amid legal disputes and uncertainty. Built with massive investments and the lifetime savings of hundreds of traders, the market had become a major source of livelihood for thousands of families directly and indirectly connected to it.

Many traders had invested heavily in shops, storage facilities, transportation systems and daily business operations within the market. Several families had taken loans, mortgaged jewellery and borrowed money with the hope that the market would secure their future. However, after the cancellation of the market licence and the ongoing legal battle, many traders are now facing severe financial hardship.

The closure of the market has not only affected traders, but also daily wage workers, transporters, hamals, suppliers and farmers who depended on the market for their income. According to sources, nearly 200 traders and many labourers have been impacted by the uncertainty surrounding the future of the market.

For years, Jai Kisan Market served as an important hub for vegetable supply, especially to Goa and nearby regions. Farmers preferred trading here because of quick payments, transparent transactions and strong business relations. Even after the licence was cancelled, traders and farmers staged protests demanding justice and the reopening of the market.

At the same time, authorities and courts raised serious concerns over alleged violations related to land-use permissions and market regulations. The Karnataka High Court and the Agricultural Marketing Department upheld the cancellation of the licence, citing violations under the Karnataka Agricultural Produce Marketing Act.

Amid the legal and political conflict, one major question still remains unanswered — what will happen to the traders and families who invested everything in Jai Kisan Market?

Today, many traders are being forced to conduct business on roadsides under extremely difficult conditions. Their investments remain stuck, businesses are collapsing and financial pressure continues to grow. Loan repayments, EMIs, children’s education expenses and pending debts have pushed several families into uncertainty.

Traders associated with Jai Kisan Market say they are not seeking sympathy, but justice, rehabilitation and a fair chance to live with dignity. They believe the market, built with years of hard work and investment, should not become a symbol of helplessness.

There is now growing demand for the government and authorities to find a balanced solution that addresses both legal concerns and humanitarian issues. Traders hope that one day Jai Kisan Market will be revived and their struggle for justice will finally be heard.
